Joseph Burke
The Master of Indigenous Relations program, for me, was a journey that provided the opportunity to dive deeply into questions that I’ve had my entire life. As a non-Indigenous person, being welcomed into a world of rich knowledge, cultures, languages and research, by faculty who have the lived experience and academic background to safely guide students through very complex content, was truly life-changing. Through listening to Elders, professors, classmates and Indigenous community members, I was able to recontextualize my approach and understanding in a way that fundamentally respects Indigenous research partners and demonstrates the importance of engaging with Indigenous research methodologies. The interdisciplinary nature of the program gave me the opportunity to build a partnership with a nearby Anishnawbek community for research of mutual interest. This partnership, through the reciprocal nature of Indigenous research methodologies, and careful interaction with Anishnawbek knowledge, led to friendships and relationships that far outlast the conclusion of my thesis. As was shared with me, in having an openness, an openness to playing an active role in these important relationships, we can find opportunities for collaboration that put into practice truth and reconciliation. I will be forever grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of this program.
