Learn from past civilizations and enrich your world.
The program in Ancient Studies is for anyone who is interested in the roots of Western and other modern civilizations. It is designed for students with a broad interest in the ancient world, with a focus on the ancient Mediterranean world, from the earliest times to the age of the emperor Justinian in the mid-sixth century CE. Because it is multidisciplinary, students will be introduced to a range of sources, approaches and theories used in the different contributing departments and disciplines. The courses cover a wide range of topics including political and social history, economic systems, international relations, religion, literature, art and archaeology, etc.
By studying the ancient world, students will learn the facts and beliefs that are at the root of Western civilization and will be able to contextualize what they learn in other fields. For example, they will understand how our vision of marketing and publicity is informed by ancient perceptions and how the analogies we use in science are rooted in the classical tradition.
