Death and Immortality in the Religions Of the West

This course examines constructions of the problem of death and plans of salvation in Western civilization in the ancient world, Judaism, Christianity, Islam and pre- or non-Christian Europe. Topics explored also include disposal of the dead, the preservation of the body, funerary ritual, death-related art and architecture and the veneration of the "very special dead." (S) (lec 3) cr 3.
